Niantic Hatches Grand Marketing Scheme with New Pokemon

December 13, 2016

It’s a Christmas miracle! It looks like there really will be some new Pokémon under your Christmas tree this December, because Niantic is officially rolling out some new little monsters. The company announced yesterday via a video on its YouTube channel that new Pokémon will start becoming available in the game.

The first new Pokémon available are Togepi and Pichu, but it’s speculated that other baby Pokemon such as Magby, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Smoochum and Elekid will also start popping up throughout the week. There is one catch, though—all these Pokémon need to be hatched from eggs. There will be no Pichus wandering down the street unless it’s the one you’ve hatched from an egg.

More specifically, Niantic said in the announcement, “Starting later today, Trainers will have the opportunity to hatch these and several other Pokémon that were originally discovered in the Johto Region in Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games.” This gives us an idea of which Pokémon to expect, and also which Pokémon to collect extra of, in case they now have the opportunity to evolve into new Pokémon.

Additionally, Niantic will also be introducing a special holiday-themed Pokémon. A limited edition Pikachu was released into the augmented reality (AR) world yesterday, and will be available until December 29, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. PST. The little guy will be sporting a festive hat to celebrate the holiday season.

There are plenty of other reasons to celebrate right now. Niantic has finally proven itself to users and listened to their demands. Players have been asking for new Pokémon for months now, and Niantic is finally delivering, just in time for the holidays and cold weather.

I can’t help but notice that the release of these new Pokémon works well with some of the other updates Niantic has introduced, like the tracker and incentives. What coincidental timing! It’s now easier than ever for players to locate how far away Pokémon are, and then make some purchases from the shop to help lure the little monsters closer to a player’s home, so that they don’t have to walk around in the cold. It must also be coincidence that hatched Pokémon are being introduced during winter, when people aren’t usually inclined to go walk around outside. If only there was an incubator or something players could buy from the shop to help expedite the hatching process…oh wait. We won’t even mention all the experience points people will get for playing every day, thanks to the Thanksgiving update.

With a whole new selection of Pokémon to catch and hatch, trainers will undoubtedly keep playing and purchasing during the winter months. This is some classic marketing: Don’t just give the people what they want…make it irresistible. Well played, Niantic.
